Stop Fighting Fires: How a Simple Tech Roadmap Can Save Your Sanity
Published on February 5, 2024 by Maryanne Chiriboga

Does this sound familiar? You ignore technology until something breaks, then you scramble to find a fix, often leading to a rushed, expensive decision. This is “firefighting mode,” and it’s an exhausting and inefficient way to manage your nonprofit’s technology.
There is a better way: creating a simple Technology Roadmap. This isn’t a 100-page document; it’s a one-page plan that helps you think proactively about your technology needs and budget.
How to Build Your One-Page Tech Roadmap
Gather your team and ask three simple questions:
1. Where are we now? (Current State)
Make a quick list of your key technology. How old are your computers? What software do you rely on for donations and accounting? What are the biggest tech frustrations you face right now? Be honest about what works and what doesn’t.
2. Where are we going? (Future State)
Think about your organization’s goals for the next 12-24 months. Are you planning a major fundraising campaign? Looking to expand a program? Hiring new staff? How can technology support these goals? (e.g., “We need a better system for tracking volunteer hours,” or “We need our website to handle event registrations.”)
3. How do we get there? (The Plan)
This is where you connect the dots. Based on your goals and current state, what are your top 1-3 tech priorities for the next year? Maybe it’s “Replace the 3 oldest computers” or “Migrate to Google Workspace” or “Redesign the ‘Donate’ page on our website.” Assign a rough budget and a timeline to each priority.
A technology roadmap transforms your tech spending from a reactive expense into a strategic investment in your mission.
